What Years of Building Dashboards Taught Me About Building Agents
I spent a long time building dashboards before I ever built an AI agent.
Not the flashy kind. The kind that helped a leadership team actually decide something. The kind where someone would walk into a Monday meeting, pull up a view, and stop arguing about what the number was so they could start arguing about what to do with it.
That work looked unglamorous from the outside. Most people think building a dashboard is a technical exercise. Pick the tool. Connect the data. Drag some fields onto a canvas. Ship.
It is not a technical exercise. It is an interpretive one. And I did not realize until recently that every hour I spent on it was training for the work I am doing now.
What a Dashboard Actually Is
A dashboard is not a visualization. A dashboard is a compression.
You are taking something huge, a messy, unreconciled, multi-source reality of what is happening inside an organization, and you are compressing it into a rectangle a human can look at for thirty seconds and walk away knowing what to do next.
That compression is brutally hard. To do it well, you have to understand three things that nobody writes down.
First, you have to understand what the leader is actually trying to decide. Not what they said they wanted to see. What decision is this information supposed to inform. If you build a dashboard without knowing that, you build a wall of numbers.
Second, you have to understand what the data can and cannot tell you. Every field has a history. Every metric has an edge case. Every chart has a way to be misread. Knowing which numbers to trust, at what level of confidence, for which question, is the entire game.
Third, you have to understand what counts as "enough." A dashboard that shows everything is a dashboard that shows nothing. The craft is knowing what to leave out.
Years of doing this teaches you something you cannot get from a course. You learn to listen to a leader describe a problem and hear the real question underneath. You learn what kinds of data conversations go nowhere. You learn when the answer is "we need better reporting" and when the answer is "we need to stop asking this question."
That skill is worth more now than it has ever been.
The Pivot
Here is what most people miss about AI agents.
An agent is a dashboard that talks back. That is the simplest way I can put it.
Where a dashboard compresses information into a rectangle a human looks at, an agent compresses information into a sentence a human reads. Where a dashboard waits for you to come find it, an agent finds you. Where a dashboard shows you the number, an agent tells you what the number means and what to do next.
The underlying skill is identical. You are still compressing messy reality into something a leader can act on. You are still deciding what to leave out. You are still trying to answer the real question underneath the stated one.
The tools changed. The craft did not.
And here is the part that matters for anyone building agents right now. The people who will build the best ones are not the prompt engineers. They are not the model fine-tuners. They are the people who spent years learning how to turn raw data into something a human could actually use to make a decision.
That is an interpretive skill. It transfers directly.
What Changes
Not everything is the same. Agents break in different places than dashboards do.
A dashboard fails loudly. The chart is wrong, the numbers do not match, someone notices. An agent fails quietly. It gives you a confident answer that sounds right. You act on it. You find out six weeks later it was wrong.
A dashboard shows you what is there. An agent decides what to surface. That is a much bigger responsibility. A bad dashboard wastes time. A bad agent sends an organization in the wrong direction.
A dashboard improves when you rebuild it. An agent improves when you refine it continuously, against new data, against new model capabilities, against how the leader actually uses it. Building an agent is never done.
These differences are why building agents well is much harder than the demos make it look. But they do not change the core skill. They amplify it. And they are why the foundation matters. Why This Is the Work I Want to Do Now
The reason I am building agents now, and not just dashboards, is that the leaders I work with have moved on from the question dashboards answer.
Ten years ago, the question was "can we see what is happening." A dashboard answered that question. Five years ago, the question was "can everyone agree on what is happening." Dashboards, built right, answered that one too.
The question now is different. The question now is "can we get the next decision made faster, with less human toil, and without missing the signal in the noise." A dashboard cannot answer that question. An agent can. But only if the person building it has already done the decade of work that dashboards force you to do.
That is where I sit. I spent years learning how to compress reality into something a leader could act on. I am now spending my time compressing it into something an agent can act on. Same craft, new output.
The leaders I work with are not looking for more reporting. They are looking for more leverage. They want their time back. They want their team more accountable. They want the signal, not the dashboard.
